Mae Wang is a rural district about an hour south of Chiang Mai, known for its lush forests, terraced fields and the Mae Wang River that flows through the valley. Mae Wang has a long historical connection with elephants. For decades they were essential working animals, used for logging, farming and transporting goods across the mountainous terrain. When logging was banned in Thailand in the late 1980s to protect its forests, many elephants and their mahouts were left without work. This led communities in Mae Wang — especially Karen families, who traditionally cared for elephants — to shift towards ethical tourism as a way to support both the animals and the local economy.
Today, Mae Wang is known for its community-run, humane elephant sanctuaries focused on care, conservation and education rather than shows or rides. The region is also popular for bamboo rafting, thanks to the gentle flow of the river, and for its scenic villages surrounded by jungle-covered hills and farmland — a peaceful alternative to more commercial tourist areas.
