Mae Kampong

High in the misty mountains east of Chiang Mai, Mae Kampong is one of northern Thailand’s most authentic and peaceful villages. Surrounded by thick forest and running streams, it offers a glimpse of the slow rhythm of rural Thai life, where the day seems to follow the pace of nature rather than the clock.

Founded over a century ago by families who grew tea and fermented tea leaves, Mae Kampong has kept its original wooden houses and its strong sense of community. Today the village is a living example of sustainable, community-based tourism. People come for the cool mountain air, the waterfalls nearby and a way of life that keeps nature, calm and local culture tied together.

It sits about an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai, which makes it the perfect day trip or overnight escape. The winding road up reveals its own small treasures along the way — hot springs, viewpoints and coffee shops perched on the mountainside, each with a taste of northern charm.

Mae Kampong’s story began more than a hundred years ago, when families from the lowlands moved up into the forested mountains east of Chiang Mai. The community became known for growing miang, the fermented tea leaves used in traditional Thai chewing, which was its main livelihood for generations. Coffee came later, and small-scale tourism followed once travellers discovered the village.

Through all those changes, Mae Kampong has held on to its traditional Lanna wooden houses and its community spirit. It is now one of Thailand’s most successful examples of community-based tourism, where visitors are welcomed less as tourists and more as guests of the village.

Staying a night here is an experience in itself. As dusk falls, the sound of the stream takes over from the noise of the city, the air cools and the smell of wood smoke drifts through the valley. Life slows right down and invites you to reconnect with simplicity and with the quiet rhythm of the hills.

In Mae Kampong every corner feels like a scene from a slower, simpler time. Wooden houses cling to green hillsides, a cool mountain stream runs through the middle of the village, and locals greet you while roasting coffee or preparing homemade dishes.

Wander the narrow paths shaded by ferns and banana trees, visit the small temples hidden in the forest and listen to the waterfall nearby. Have a freshly brewed coffee from local beans at a mountainside café overlooking the valley, or join a homestay family and see daily village life from the inside.

Mornings here are misty, afternoons are full of birdsong and nights bring a deep silence under a sky full of stars — the balance between nature, culture and calm that makes the village what it is.
