Welcome to Chiang Mai
Arrive in Chiang Mai, the cultural capital of northern Thailand — a city wrapped in mountains, ancient temples and an authentic soul that quickly wins you over.
Settle into your hotel and take the rest of the day to rest and soak up the relaxed atmosphere of the old city before the adventure begins.
Markets & Temples: Discovering Chiang Mai
Today we discover the essence of Chiang Mai, blending local life, nature and spirituality. We begin at the lively Mueang Mai Market, where locals shop for fresh produce, then continue to the famous Warorot Market, a vibrant hub of local goods, textiles and traditional food.
Later we take the Monk’s Trail, a jungle path traditionally walked barefoot by monks, leading up to the peaceful Wat Pha Lat and on to Doi Suthep, one of Chiang Mai’s most iconic temples, with sweeping views over the whole city.
In the evening, enjoy the city’s easy-going atmosphere — a riverside drink, good food and live music.
Doi Inthanon & Baan Pa Pong Piang
An early start to head into the north. Our first stop is Mae Chaem, one of the most authentic and least touristy areas of the country, surrounded by mountains, forests and rice fields.
We explore Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand’s highest peak, discovering the spectacular Royal Twin Pagodas and panoramic viewpoints. Along the way we stop at some of the park’s most beautiful waterfalls — Mae Klang, Wachirathan and Sirithan — and, if you like, we can add a one-hour trek through the lush forest.
Later we reach Baan Pa Pong Piang, a small village famous for its stunning rice terraces — during the green season the landscape turns into a vast mosaic of colour, one of the most photogenic and peaceful corners of the north. Tonight we stay in a traditional family house among the rice paddies, a privileged setting to disconnect and listen to the sounds of nature.
Karen Life: Traditions, Cooking & Mountains
After breakfast we head deeper into the mountains to a small village of the Karen community in Mae Chaem, where time seems to stand still and silence, nature and calm take over.
In the afternoon we share everyday life with local families — walking through the gardens and plantations, learning about what they grow and gathering fresh vegetables for the evening. We then take part in a traditional Karen cooking class, preparing typical dishes with local ingredients and recipes passed down through generations, before sharing dinner together.
To end the day, the village schoolchildren perform a traditional Karen dance — a beautiful way to discover their culture, music and traditions, in a community where everything is shared and family comes first.
Ban Rak Thai
We wake surrounded by the silence of the mountains. After a homemade breakfast, a local guide leads us on a short 20-minute walk to a hidden waterfall in the forest — the perfect moment to enjoy nature and say goodbye to this special place.
Before leaving, we take part in the traditional Karen hand-tying ceremony, an ancestral ritual in which village elders tie a white thread around your wrist as a symbol of protection, good luck and safe travels — one of the most moving traditions of Karen culture.
We then continue north to Ban Rak Thai, a mountain village near the Myanmar border founded by Yunnanese Chinese settlers. With its traditional houses, tea plantations and a lake at its heart, it feels like a corner of China in the Thai mountains. In the afternoon, stroll the village, take a boat ride on the lake and enjoy local tea and cuisine.
Pai
After breakfast we continue to Pai, a small mountain town known for its relaxed, creative atmosphere surrounded by nature. Our first stop is Wat Phra That Mae Yen, one of Pai’s most iconic temples, with lovely views over the valley. We also walk the Kho Ku So Bamboo Bridge across the rice fields and take in the scenery from the famous Yun Lai Viewpoint.
Spend the day discovering the town’s more alternative, bohemian side — quiet corners, local artists and live music. As evening falls, wander Pai’s street-food night market to taste some of the best local dishes in a lively setting.
Tonight we stay in cosy bungalows close to the market, perfect for enjoying Pai’s easy-going vibe.
Back to Chiang Mai
We begin the journey back to Chiang Mai. After breakfast we visit Pai Canyon, with time for a short walk and one last look at the spectacular landscapes of the north.
Before leaving, enjoy a relaxed stroll through the streets of Pai and a final coffee, saying goodbye to the laid-back charm of this mountain town. In the afternoon we arrive back in Chiang Mai — and if you’d like to keep going, the trip can be extended with more days and experiences, or we arrange your onward transfer.
