Bangkok’s history is closely connected to the Chao Phraya River. Originally, it was a small trading post and a village called Bang Makok (“Place of Olives”), located near the river’s western bank. Its strategic position turned it into an important commercial point during the Ayutthaya Kingdom.

When Ayutthaya fell to the Burmese in 1767, the capital moved temporarily to Thonburi (today part of Bangkok). A few years later, in 1782, King Rama I founded a new capital on the opposite side of the river and named it Krung Rattanakosin, the city that would become modern Bangkok.

From there, Bangkok developed rapidly: the 1780s–1800s saw the construction of the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and the Emerald Buddha. During the 1800s–1900s, an expansion of canals (khlongs) earned it the nickname “Venice of the East.” The late 19th century brought modernization under King Rama V, including railways and administrative reforms. Through the 20th century, Bangkok grew into Thailand’s center of government, diplomacy, and trade — and today it stands as a global city known for culture, food, commerce, nightlife, and diversity.

Today, Bangkok is a massive urban hub with more than 10 million people, combining royal heritage, Buddhist traditions, and fast-paced modern life.
