Chiang Mai

chiang mai

Surrounded by misty mountains and green valleys, Chiang Mai is northern Thailand’s most enchanting city, a place where ancient heritage meets modern creativity.

Founded in 1296 by King Mengrai, Chiang Mai became the capital of the Lanna Kingdom (“Land of a Million Rice Fields”). For centuries, it was the spiritual and political center of northern Thailand, known for its distinctive art, architecture, and language.

The city flourished as part of a powerful network of Southeast Asian kingdoms, trading with Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, and even distant Burma (Myanmar). After periods of Burmese control in the 16th to 18th centuries, Chiang Mai rejoined the Siamese Kingdom in the late 1700s, preserving much of its cultural independence and identity.

Today, traces of these kingdoms remain in Chiang Mai’s temples, moats, and traditions, a living museum of Lanna culture that continues to inspire artists, monks, and travelers from around the world.
