Bangkok reveals itself from the water

The Chao Phraya and its canals shaped this city long before its roads did: the palaces, the markets and the way people live still face the water. This day follows that logic. You board the public boats, walk into the Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha, stand in front of the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, cross the river to Wat Arun and close the afternoon on a long-tail boat through the canals.

The plan for the day

Pier and flower market

A morning departure to the pier to board the public boats heading into the centre. You glide past the right bank and the lively Pak Khlong Talat flower market — a colourful first look at riverside Bangkok.

Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew

Visit the Grand Palace, built in 1782, with its spectacular ensemble of royal buildings. At its heart stands Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, home to a revered statue dating back to the 14th century.

Wat Pho and Wat Arun

Walk to Wat Pho, one of the oldest temples in the city, to see the famous Reclining Buddha. Then cross the river by small boat to Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, rising on the far bank with its porcelain-covered spires.

Long-tail boat on the Chao Phraya

The day closes with a private long-tail boat ride along the Chao Phraya. This is the Venice of the East: houses on stilts, small temples between them and a way of life that still runs at the pace of the water.
