Getting around Chiang Mai is straightforward and enjoyable. Here is everything you need to know to move around the city comfortably and confidently.
From the Airport
Chiang Mai airport is close to the city — about 15 minutes by car. Grab or Bolt are the easiest and safest options for getting to your hotel or any area within the city. Airport taxis have fixed fares (usually 150–200 THB).
Local Transport
Unlike Bangkok, Chiang Mai has no metro or public bus system.
Songthaews (Red Trucks): Chiang Mai’s version of local buses — shared red pickup trucks that follow flexible routes through the city. Flag one down, tell the driver your destination, and they’ll let you know if they’re heading that way. Press the buzzer when near your stop. Fares usually range from 30–40 THB within the city center.
Tuk-tuks: Small three-wheeled taxis great for short rides. Always negotiate the price before starting (typically 60–120 THB).
Grab and Bolt: Safe, reliable, and app-based options for both cars and motorbikes.
Scooter or Motorbike Rental: The standard price for a 125cc Scoopy is around 250 THB (≈ €6.30 / ≈ $6.70) per day. Always wear a helmet and carry your international driving permit. A regular car driving licence is not valid for riding motorbikes in Thailand — you must have a motorbike licence. The fine is 500 baht, and after being fined you have a 3-day grace period before the police can issue another fine.
Bicycles: Many hostels and hotels rent bicycles for the day — an enjoyable, eco-friendly way to explore the Old City. As a personal recommendation, avoid using a bicycle outside the Old Town square.
